Manicure Monday: Chic Neutrals

I doubt it's considered healthy, my relationship with nail polish. It really is a full-scale obsession, and despite my frankly ridiculous stash, all it takes is for one of my favourite brands to release a new collection, and I go all Pokemon. To try and hold myself back from trying to catch 'em all this year, I have decided to have a bit of a buying-ban, and rediscover some old gems from my stash. To encourage myself in this noble endeavour, I will be sharing some of my favourites on this little blog, to remind myself of the beauties currently in my possession.

Kicking things off with the basics, in the last couple of weeks, once I finally tore myself away from Essie's The Twill of It, I have been loving a chic neutral nail (or ten). Low-maintenance, subtle shades that flatter the skin, are a nail essential, and I think everyone needs at least one in their stash. Here are the ones I have been loving lately.

OPI Gouda Gouda Two Shoes
Currently gracing my nails, I had forgotten how much I loved this polish. The colour is best described, I think, as a rosy brown. It reminds me of my favourite Bobbi Brown blusher, Brown Berry. The tiniest touch of gold shimmer makes this polish extra-special, but it really is super-subtle (and impossible to photograph, or so I found!). I've had two compliments on it today, so in my book, that makes it a winner.

Nails Inc Jermyn Street
If I remember correctly, this was a freebie with Glamour magazine ages ago. A glossy creme taupe, it's as classic a neutral as I think you'll find. I can't imagine a skin tone it wouldn't suit, and it's smart enough to be appropriate for any occasion. This is a polish for when my nails are feeling all grown up.

OPI Wooden Shoe Like To Know
Another shoe-themed stunner from OPI's Spring 2012 Holland collection. I love the chocolate brown shade, and the subtle golden shimmer seals the deal for me. I love this one, and just wish, as with Gouda Gouda Two Shoes, I could have done the shimmer justice in my photographs.

Nails Inc St Moritz
I haven't a clue where I got this, or when. I don't remember buying it, but feel as though I have owned and loved it forever. Having googled it, I'm none the wiser, so maybe it was delivered to me by a nail fairy. This is the most coppery shade of the bunch, as well as the glitziest, with a far more obvious gorgeous golden shimmer. I think this looks best with a tan.

OPI You Don't Know Jaques
One of the best things about rediscovering polishes is remembering their names. OPI names always seem to tickle me the most. This is a glossy brown taupe, darker than the other shades here, and in my opinion, a real classic. As with Jermyn St, it's so universally wearable and appropriate, making it a timeless winner.

I found it really hard to photograph the swatches of these; I feel that they look a lot more similar in the photos than they do in real life! In the interests of fairness, I used two coats of each, with no topcoat for these swatches. I painted the back of the nail too, as light shines through otherwise.

Trying to capture that shimmer for you!
Are you obsessed with nail polish? What's your favourite neutral shade?

  1. I'm so obsessed with nail polish too! It's ridiculous how obsessed I am, and it's only really recently I've started wearing it again! I don't really have a favourite neutral shade as I like a more 'out there' shade. I'm loving Barry M's Fuchsia nail paint at the mo! And also OPI Can't Find My Czechbook!

    1. They really are the best for colour range/effects, I do find they chip more than OPI though. The best thing about blogging is finally not being alone in these obsessions! xx

    1. It really is! My photos are a bit rubbish, they aren't showing the sparkly golden-ness of it, but it's a real beauty. I have no recollection of buying it, and I don't think they do it any more, so I'll be gutted when it runs out. It hasn't gone thick or gloopy though, and I have had it years! x
